Web Basics
ESM 595K - Winter 2008
This first meeting will be a review of basic Web infrastructure. Before
the meeting, you should:
- Download and install XAMPP (or
XAMPP "Lite" if it's available) on your personal computer or
your Bren account.
- You can skip this step if you already have
- a web server (e.g. Apache);
- a server-side application language (e.g. PHP); and
- a relational database (e.g. MySQL)
installed.
- Read "Information
Management: A Proposal" (20 pp.) -- this is Tim Berners-Lee's
original proposal for what became the World-Wide Web.
- Read "What
Is Web 2.0" (about 16 pp.) -- this is the best recent summary
of what the Web is turning into.
- Bring your questions! These will help structure where
we go from here.
