If you are not a Bren student, email scheduling@bren.ucsb.edu to obtain an approval code to enroll. Then, if you need access to the Bren computing network, fill out and submit a Computer Account Request Form.

WHAT:

ESM 263 is a one-quarter introduction to geographic information systems (GIS). The course is intended for MESM students who need to acquire a working knowledge of GIS theory and practice in a single quarter.

HOW:

Grades will be based on the homeworks. (No final!)

- Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, 4th edition. Kang-tsung (Karl) Chang, 2007.
  ISBN: 978-0-07-305115-4 (no CD), 978-0-07-331279-8 (with CD)
  - You don't need the CD; any materials from it we need will be put online.
  - Yes, this book is too expensive. However, it's the only text I've found that covers almost all the material the course will cover. Feel free to share.

- Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop, 2nd ed. Tim Ormsby et al, 2004.
  ISBN: 1-58948-083-X
  - A more structured tutorial for ArcGIS, if you need it.
  - Includes a copy of ArcGIS for your home computer, with a 6-month non-renewable license.
  - There are several copies of this book available in the GIS lab and in the Bren Library.
